OK, I admit, 5km is not very far! However, throw into this equation a lot of reasonably unfit ladies and an extremely hilly course, and completing the Tesco ‘Race for Life’ course at Temple Newsam, Leeds becomes quite an achievement. The mood and atmosphere on this day could not have been better and to see 5000 women of every shape, size, age and ability counting down from ten at the start was truly inspiring.

The University of York Riding Club made up a small, but noticeable (!!) percentage of the runners that day and I cannot recommend the occasion highly enough. The non-competitive nature of the event appealed to a huge number of us and it has been a fantastic experience for bringing us closer as a team and shifting some, if not all of the cellulite. We managed to convince the University’s Men’s Rugby Union President to give us some initial fitness training and ideas and trained two to three times a week in advance of the event. Everybody completed the course, despite a slightly pained expression being evident when running up the hills, and one member of our team even managed to finish third of the five thousand participants!!!

The Team

One week after the event and the running shoes have yet to be banished to the back of the wardrobe. Many of the ‘Race for Life’ team have acquired an interest in running and fitness they never before had, and the words ‘London Marathon’ seem to crop up surprisingly often in conversation!! A number of us have also been aware of the noticeable improvement our participation, even at this low level, has had on our performance in other sports and involvement in this event has even convinced some of the team to quit the fags!

Running, and the related success’ it brings are relative. We, at the University of York are under no illusions that we ran a marathon. However, those who participated achieved something for themselves and did something charitable in the process. More importantly, Race for Life appears for many to have laid the foundations for bigger things to come with the next target being the Cancer Research 10km runs held in the UK. The success of these events hinges on support and respect for the people taking part, and I urge everyone to encourage someone to get involved. If you’re not running then get down to your local race and cheer the people on who are. I can assure you they will be grateful!!

The total amount raised by the University of York Race for Life team is yet to be confirmed, but it is thought that together they raised around £1500.
