Monday's main event for the hosts and home fans was the Men's 5000m, an event convincingly won by Kenya's emerging talent Augustine Choge.
The Women's 1500m heats produced no upsets and all those favoured to progress did so with relative ease. The 2 heats were won by two Brit athletes Hayley Tullett (Wales) and Helen Clitheroe (England). see results below

Kerryn McCann of Australia retained the title she captured in Manchester 2002, with a devastating sprint finish to overall Kenya's Helen Cherono. McCann's winning time was 2:30:54 with England's Liz Yelling taking the Bronze ahead of Wales Tracey Morris.
