Olympian Michael East the country's top middle distance runner, has jumped at the opportunity to start the BUPA Great South Run and David Lloyd Miles in Portsmouth on Saturday. East, a local Pompey boy although he competes for Newham and Essex Beagles, finished a brilliant sixth in this year's Olympic 1,500m - the only individual British male track athlete to qualify for a final.
Now East will be offering expert advice to the club and fun runners who will test their ability by running an electronically timed David Lloyd sponsored mile when the BUPA Great South Run junior and mini events are held on Southsea seafront.
David Hart marketing director of the meeting, said: "In the past these youngsters races have traditionally been held with the main BUPA Great South Run on the Sunday, but now they have their own specific slot a day before the main race. "With the added attraction of the David Lloyd miles, I am sure the afternoon's programme will give a brilliant kickstart to what is becoming of the biggest road running festivals in the country. "Michael was delighted when invited to become involved and start both the Junior Run and set off the first few waves of the David Lloyd miles."
East in May this year also won an international mile in Balmoral, Scotland, which was sponsored by David Lloyd and hosted the first-ever timed miles in the Great Run Series of races. Late entrants for the David Lloyd Leisure Miles can enter at the registration marquee opposite the D Day Museum on Southsea front from 1.00pm.
