World marathon champion Paula Radcliffe is to lead the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team in the Chiba International Ekiden Marathon Relay in Japan on Wednesday 23 November.
Announcing the news today, UK Athletics Director of Athlete Development Zara Hyde Peters said: “The organisers of this prestigious race always invite the world’s leading endurance runners and we are delighted that it will be Paula’s first appearance in a GB vest since her triumph in the World Championships marathon in Helsinki.”
Ethiopia has dominated the women’s race for the last three years but UKA Performance Director for Endurance Alan Storey said: “With Paula’s participation, the chances are that we will be extremely competitive.”
The full GB team - five men and six women - will be named after the National Road Relays at Sutton Park, Birmingham, on Saturday 22 October, when Radcliffe intends to race for her club, Bedford and County AC.
