GB TEAM FOR WORLD UNIVERSITY XC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) has joined forces with UK Athletics (UKA) for the first time to ensure a full Great Britain Team will compete at the World University Cross Country Championships in Algiers, Algeria, on Friday 24 March.
BUSA Team Manager Chris Coleman said: “We are delighted that the governing body has assisted with the selection and co-funding of a full squad of six men and five women.”
UK Athletics’ Senior Co-ordinator for Endurance Spencer Barden, who was in the GB Men’s Team that won Silver medals at the World University Cross Country Championships in 2000, said: “The Endurance Event Management Group of UKA strongly believe this is an important development event for our national-standard athletes striving to make an impact at international level.”
The GB Women will be striving to emulate Louise Damen, Kate Reed and Collette Fagan who won the Team Gold medals the last time the World University Cross Country Championships were held in 2004. And they are in form: Lizzie Hall won the English National on Saturday at her first attempt as a senior; Freya Murray is the Scottish National Champion; Elle Baker is the British Students’ Champion; Hatti Dean is a former English National Bronze medallist; and Kate Reed finished fourth in the World University Championships two years ago and played a crucial part in Norwich Union GB winning the Senior Women’s Team Silver medals at this winter’s SPAR European Cross Country Championships.
The full GB Team, which will depart for Algeria on 22 March and return on 25 March, is:
