Copenhagen Marathon 20 May 2007

Haile Gebrselassie intends waiting until after the Flora London Marathon in April before deciding his racing programme for the next year.

The 34-year-old Ethiopian star however revealed that the BUPA Great North Run, which twice in the past six years he has missed through injury, could figure in his plans.

Great North Run race organisers spoke with Gebrselassie at the Seville International Cross Country on Sunday where he expressed enthusiasm in finally competing in the World's biggest half marathon.

"I will see what happens in London before making any decisions about where I race," said Gebrselassie.

The "Emperor" said he has yet to decide whether to compete at the World Championships in August or miss Osaka and prepare for an autumn marathon.

Gebrselassie, who topped last year's ranking lists with his victory in Berlin and then two months later won the Fukuoka marathon, remains open minded.

He said: "For the moment I'm concentrating just on London, it is a most important race to win and it will be very tough given the strength of the field."

However Gebrselassie, the world half marathon record holder over the distance, insists one day he will contest the event.

But the world's greatest-ever distance runner, is also adamant he will only take part if one hundred per cent fit and in shape to produce a memorable performance.

"I planned to come many years back," said Gebrselassie, who was scheduled to top the bill following his 2000 Olympic Games 10000 metres success in Sydney.

"I'm still thinking about coming to win that race, because it is the best half marathon in the world.

"To win there also would be a nice thing and I also know the organisers who have been so involved in our Great Ethiopian Run.

"I hope one day, I will do that."
