Scottish athletes faced tough competition at the Celtic International Cross Country in Belfast on Saturday 6th January.

The team did well to record some fine results, none better than in the men's u-20 race with Craig Ruddy (Inverclyde), Conor McNulty (Kilbarchan) and Michael Gillespie (Central) recording 5th, 6th and 7th place finishes respectively.

City of Glasgow athlete Beth Potter took 3rd in the u-17 girls race, with Gemma Cormack (Banff Academy) also finishing in the top 10.

Sarah Kelly (Fife AC) and Emily Stewart (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers) came home in 14th and 22nd places respectively.

In the u-17 boy's event, Matthew Graham (Kirkintilloch) was first team member home in 19th place, with Kilbarchan athlete Calum Hawkins following in 27th.

The senior men's race was a close affair with the four leading athletes, Moses Kipsiro, Fabiano Joseph, Patrick Musyoki and Ibrahim Jeyllan, bunched together for the majority of the race.

The Scottish representatives also finished in quick succession, Simon Plummer (Carnegie) leading the team home in 18th place overall, followed closely by Mark Pollard (Inverclyde) and Tom Russell (Stroud) in 20th and 21st places respectively, with John Newsom (Pitreavie) in 23rd place, only 13 seconds behind.

In the senior women's race Ethiopia's Etalemahu Kidane was the convincing winner, striding home ahead of compatriot Teyiba Erkesso, winner of last month's Lotto CrossCup in Brussels.

The Scottish challenge was lead by u-20 City of Glasgow athlete Josephine Moultrie in 31st place, with Fiona Gentles (Kirkintilloch) in 32nd.

Elsbeth Curran (Kilbarchan), also u-20, finished in 43rd place ahead of teammate Charlotte Forbes (Aberdeen), in 44th.

Nithsdale athlete Nicola Hood (55th) and Central's Jennifer Emsley (59th), made up the Scottish compliment.
