Welcome to the background information to Dave Thom. The editor Time-to-Run, Scotland. Scotland's very own online running information site.

Dave Thom was born and raised in Lanarkshire, in the years that saw the decline and demise of the traditional heavy industries of coal, steel and shipbuilding.

He left school and worked for a year with GKN Steelstock before moving to University of Glasgow as an Electron Microscopy technician, where he gained Chemistry qualifications. During the 80's, as computers and networks started to infiltrate University Departments there was a natural affinity, and by default he became the Departments IT technician. Later he moved to become Systems Manager for two other University Departments.

Dave, was introduced to Cross Country at school, where football was the ubiquitous sport. After leaving school there was a sporting lull, until he took up cycling in the early 80's. This reintroduced him to running, as a way to keep fit during the winter.

It quickly became apparent that he was never going to be great at either, but he was better as a runner. He ran a few half marathons and quickly went from 1:30 to 1:15, then in the 90's to 70 mins with a best of 70:04, other PB's are 3,000m 8:54, 10k 31:35, 5k 14:58. He kas also run quite a few 3,000 s/c but never in much under 10 mins.

Dave prefers the roads to the country. The reason being his long low stride, is not suited to the terrain and he finds things very difficult. He even tried the London Marathon in 1997 where the aim was to get round, which he did in 2:38. Marathons are not his first love!!

His attitude to running has become more serious with time and when he became a veteran, everything was seen in a different light. He won the veteran category in almost every race that year, picking up many Scottish and British veteran championship medals along the way.

Dave is married with two boys, with the youngest showing that he may be a talented sportsman. His other interests are Hillwalking, cycling (for leisure these days) and sadly computing. His wife, Lesley, would also list his amazing ability to sit and do nothing for hours at a time.

With great pleasure we welcome Dave to the pages of Time-to-Run
