{"id":175,"date":"2018-09-18T06:01:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T06:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.time-to-run.co.uk\/scotland\/?p=175"},"modified":"2025-11-28T11:37:42","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T11:37:42","slug":"jornet-gerardi-win-glen-coe-skyline-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.time-to-run.co.uk\/scotland\/news\/jornet-gerardi-win-glen-coe-skyline-2018","title":{"rendered":"Jornet, Gerardi win Glen Coe Skyline 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spain\u2019s Kilian Jornet and American Hillary Gerardi battled the worst of the weekend\u2019s weather in the Scottish Highlands to triumph in the Salomon Glen Coe Skyline race yesterday (Sunday).<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Kilian Jornet and Hillary Gerardi win Salomon Glen Coe Skyline 2018<\/h3>\n<p>In rain and strong winds, 200 athletes from across the world took on the 32km course through challenging mountainous terrain.<\/p>\n<p>The route, amounting to a total ascent of 2700m, included an exposed Grade 3 scramble of Curved Ridge on Buachaille Etive Mor.<\/p>\n<p>After crossing the finish line in Kinlochleven in 03:37:17, Kilian said: \u201cI love to do races like this. It was hard and technical, which I like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the weather made the course wet and slippery and the winds high up were very strong, it was still such fun race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo win is a bonus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kilian won last year\u2019s Salomon Glen Coe Skyline and on Saturday became the SKY 2018 Skyrunning World Champion, also part of Skyline Scotland\u2019s festival weekend of Skyrunning.<\/p>\n<p>For the second year in a row, Andr\u00e9 Jonsson, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time-to-run.com\/se\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a>, was runner up to Kilian. Andr\u00e9 was also runner up in Friday\u2019s ULTRA 2018 Skyrunning World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Today, he came home some three minutes after the dominant Salomon Team athlete in 03:40:33.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cScotland is an amazing place to run in the mountains. The weather made it wet and slippery, especially on Curved Ridge, but I think I went up faster than last year. I ran the best I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Jung, of Italy, was third in 03:42:33. He said: \u201cIt is a dream to race with Kilian and Andre \u2013 and to be on the podium. I love Scotland\u2019s mountain races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The race, which is part of the 2018 MIGU Run Skyrunner\u00ae World Series 2018 and one of the World Series Sky Extra races, was a Plan B \u201cbad weather\u201d course.<\/p>\n<p>Race officials deemed wind speeds of 100kph on high ground to be too dangerous for the full 52km route including one of the UK\u2019s infamous Aonach Eagach Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Kilian summed up the day\u2019s racing for many athletes, saying: \u201cIt might have been a shorter course than many of us hoped to run, but it was still very hard and technical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScotland\u2019s terrain makes these races tough but a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glen Coe Skyline &#8211; Thrilling finish to female race<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After more than 30km of running, first and second place in the female race was determined by a 200m sprint for the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Winning by just seven seconds in a time of 04:17:48, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time-to-run.us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA<\/a> athlete Hillary Gerardi described second placed Jasmin Paris, of Great Britain, as \u201ca machine on the downhills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jasmin, who won the race in 2016, quickly retorted: \u201cHillary says I am a machine on the downhills but she is a machine on the uphills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hillary added: \u201cWhile I was disappointed that we did not get to run the full course it was the right decision by the race officials. It was cold, wet and very, very windy on the mountains today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed the competition with Jasmin and we were so close, with Jasmin stronger than me on the downhills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had asked her what would happen if we crossed the finish line together and she told me: \u2018That won\u2019t happen because we will sprint to the end.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what we did and I had to give it everything to win.
