Aldershot-based Steph Twell has smashed Yvonne Murray’s 15-year-old Scottish 5000m record and leapt to fourth place in the all-time British 5000m rankings.
It follows a fine performance at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels on Friday evening.
She took 22 seconds off her personal best, recording a time of 14.54.08 as she finished in eleventh place in a race won by Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot.
Twell beat Murray’s record, which was set in London in 1995, by 2.86sec.
The English-based athlete, who finished nearly 21 seconds behind Cheruiyot, will run the 1500m and 5000m for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
