Malcolm selected as Captain of Daegu Team
UKA today announced defending World champions Jessica Ennis (coach: Toni Minichiello) and Phillips Idowu (Aston Moore) in a 67-strong squad as part of the Aviva Great Britain & Northern Ireland team for the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea on 27 August – 4 September.
Strongly tipped medal hopes Mo Farah (Alberto Salazar) and Dai Greene (Malcolm Arnold) will also board the plane to Asia along with 2009 Berlin silver and bronze medallists Lisa Dobriskey 1500m (Ricky Soos) and Jenny Meadows 800m (Trevor Painter).
Looking to follow on from their success at the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona, Commonwealth champion Andy Turner (Lloyd Cowan), Christian Malcolm (Dan Pfaff) and Chris Tomlinson (Frank Attoh) have been selected in the 110m hurdles, 200m and long jump respectively.
There are a number of new faces representing the Aviva GB & NI senior outdoor team for the first time including reigning European Under-23 400m hurdles champion Jack Green (Malcolm Arnold) and European Under-23 110m hurdles bronze medallist Lawrence Clarke (Malcolm Arnold). Triple jumper Yamilè Aldama (Frank Attoh) will compete in a Great Britain vest for the first time.
Elsewhere, national champions Dwain Chambers (self coached), Goldie Sayers (Dan Pfaff) and Jeanette Kwayke (Michael Afilaka), who makes her long-awaited return to international competition after injury, are some of the key names selected for the international show-piece event. The inclusion of sprinter Marlon Devonish (Dan Pfaff) marks a record eighth appearance for the Aviva GB & NI team at a World Championship.
Helen Clitheroe (John Nuttall), James Shane (Martin Brown), Perri Shakes-Drayton (Christopher Zah), Tiffany Porter (James Henry) and Holly Bleasdale (Julien Raffalli-Ebezant) are the pick of the athletes heading into the 13th World Championships in scintillating form.
European indoor champion Clitheroe shaved 24 seconds off her lifetime best over 5000m at the recent Aviva London Grand Prix, while Shane clocked a personal best at the Aviva UK National Championships in the 1500m – the fastest time since Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett won their national titles. Shakes-Drayton, Porter and UK pole vault record holder Bleasdale are all ranked inside the world’s top 10 this season.
UKA Head Coach Charles van Commenee said: “This team has been selected to give us the best possible results at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu. I am looking to see an improvement from two years ago in Berlin, where we recorded six medals and 20 top eight finishes.
“It is important to remember there is work to do before London 2012 and Daegu is another stop on the journey to make our athletes run faster, jump higher and throw further. The aim in Daegu is to get more athletes within touching distance of the podium and these World Championships are ideal preparation for what the athletes will encounter next summer and beyond.”
The team will be captained by European silver medallist Christian Malcolm, who made his first appearance in a British vest 15 years ago. The Welsh sprinter was pleasantly surprised by the captaincy: “This is such a great honour, I can’t believe it. It is a proud moment in any sport to captain your country.
“I’ve experienced a lot since the age of 17 and have years of top level sport behind me and you wake up and realise that you might have a lot to offer. I hope I can be there for the team to say the right thing at the right time whether they’ve been disappointed or fulfilled their dream, after all I’ve had experience of both!”
The team will now prepare for the World Championships at the Aviva holding camp in Ulsan, South Korea, in the week leading up to the competition.
