Scots at BMC in Manchester

Over 40 Scots had entered the first of this year’s BMC Grand Prix meetings in Manchester’s Sports City on Saturday night. Despite the cold and breezy weather there were more than 16 Personal Bests by the Scottish contingent as well as several individual race victories and two performances inside the European U23 Qualifying guidelines. The exploits of Kimberley Reed and Myra Perkins have already been reported upon.  However, to recapitulate:

• Sixteen year old Kimberley Reed (Edinburgh AC) qualified for the World Youth Championships with a throw of 53.63 metres.  This mark also exceeds the Scottish U17 female age group record.  Her series:- 51.42m: 52.88m: 52.04m: 53.63m: 50.38m: 51.36.  The World Youth Championships are to be held in Lille, France in July.
• Nineteen year old Myra Perkins (Falkirk) qualified for the European Junior Championships to be held in Tallin, Estonia, in July with a throw of 57.87 metres. [Read more…]

Hawkins and Matheson for Spain Worlds

Scottish National Cross Country Championship winners, Derek Hawkins (Kilbarachan AC) and Ross Matheson (Lasswade) have been selected for senior and U20 categories respectively in a 24-strong Aviva GB&NI team for the 39th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Punta Umbria , Spain on Sunday 20 March 2011.

21 year old Hawkins who was credible 6th in the trial race at the Birmingham Inter Counties Championships at the weekend will be looking to build on this break-through season which started with him representing UK at the European U23 Championships in December and has continued with impressive runs in Edinburgh ; Antrim and Dublin since the turn of the year. McConnell takes silver in Paris

Lee McConnell (Shaftesbury) took silver as part of the GB 4x400m team at the European Indoor Championships in Paris.

The team of Kelly Sotherton, Marilyn Okoro, Lee McConnell and Jenny Meadows recorded a time of 3.31.36 to take silver behind Russia with France taking the bronze.

Having won European indoor bronze in both 2005 and 2007, going one better in Paris adds to McConnell’s already impressive medal tally both indoors and out. It was a successful championships for the GB team, placing 4th in the medal table behind Russia, France and Germany.

Great Britain won 8 medals accross the three days of competition; silver for both men’s and women’s 4x400m teams, Dwain Chambers in the 60m, Jenny Meadows in the 800m and Tiffany Ofili in the 60m hurdles; bronze for Richard Buck in the 400m and fantastic golds for Mo Farah and Helen Clitheroe in the 3000m. The French team rose to the occassion of being host nation and it’s to be hoped the same effect will be evident at both London 2012 and Glasgow 2014.
