Tony Hadley, Peter Stanley, Martin Rush, Malcolm Fenton and Alan Richardson have all been appointed in what is the latest move by Performance Director Neil Black and Head of Coaching and Development Richard Wheater to develop the world class coaching and development programme in the UK.

The primary role of Event Group Leads will be to lead and deliver coach development activity within their event group. They will be tasked with supporting specific coaches, mostly top national level coaches and the coaches of athletes on the World Class Performance Programme, as well as leading the development of event specific content for educational and online offerings. They will also undertake duties on behalf of England Athletics and the National Coach Development Programme will remain a core part of their work.

Tony Hadley has been a coach to multiple Olympic sprinters over a number of years, including former 4x400m relay World Champion Derek Redmond. Currently the England Athletics National Coach Mentor for 400m, Hadley takes the role as Event Group Lead for Sprints and Hurdles.

Peter Stanley, previously National Coach Mentor for triple jumps and jump for England Athletics, becomes Event Group Lead for Jumps and Combined Events. Stanley was previously coach to former Olympic champion and world triple jump record holder Jonathan Edwards as well as 2007 World Championship long jump silver medallist Jadel Gregorio and current long jumper JJ Jegede.

Martin Rush follows his role as National Coach Mentor for Endurance and Walks for England Athletics by becoming Event Group Lead for Endurance. Martin is coach to a number of international endurance athletes and as an athlete competed in the 20km walk at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and finished seventh in the 1996 Commonwealth Games.

Malcolm Fenton becomes Event Group Lead for Throws having played a big role in the significant rise in throwing standards at all levels over the past four years. Fenton is hugely experienced and has worked as National Coach Mentor for hammer, discus and shot for England Athletics and has coached a number of athletes to Olympic level.

Alan Richardson, formerly England Athletics’ National Coach Mentor and UKA’s National Event Coach for pole vault takes a cross-disciplinary role which will see him work alongside Jo Jennings to support coaches of athletes on British Athletics’ Futures Programme as well as working with targeted coaches. Richardson will also work with the other Event Group leads to ensure that a significant online presence is levered to best effect and is accessible at all levels. The 32 year old coaches a group including Scottish record holder Gregor MacLean and national under-20 champion Dan Gardner.

Neil Black, British Athletics Performance Director, believes that these appointments represent further improvements to British Athletics’ world class coaching and development programme.

“I am delighted by the appointment of these new National Event Group Leads; it highlights our continued commitment to coaching development and builds upon the work already done in this area. These five coaches have great experience and I’m certain will play a major role in developing talented young coaches as we move forward.”

Richard Wheater, Head of Coaching and Development, said the emphasis and level of collaboration between British Athletics and England Athletics is highlighted by the appointments.

“These appointments show the value of British Athletics and England Athletics working together to develop coaching. All five of the new Event Group Leads have vast experience of mentoring and supporting coaches and will be extremely valuable as the sport continues to progress in the coming years.”
