Middle Distance race opportunities

track run

Scottishathletics (with the support of the GAA) are glad to announce a Middle Distance Project focussing on developing athletes over 800m, 1500m and 3000m.

We will be looking to send a minibus of athletes and coaches down to the British Miler Club Gold Standard Races (North) at Stretford in Manchester over the summer season in order to foster their progression and development by assisting them to be involved in competition environments of an appropriate level.

The programme is primarily aimed at senior school pupils, further education students and late developing seniors – as well as their coaches.

At this point we are costing the project and will confirm costs for athletes/coaches in due course, but are keen to get the information out there to allow coaches time to plan effectively.

The dates for the Open Meetings are:

Tue 6 May

Tue 20 May

Tue 10 June

Tue 1 July

Tue 22 July

Tue 12 Aug

Tue 26 Aug

The provisional standards for being involved in the project are:

Male 800m: sub 1:56 runners only (of which there were 40 athletes in Scotland 2013)

Male 1500m: sub 4:00 runners only (of which there were 41 athletes in Scotland 2013)

Male 3000m: sub 8:45 runners only (of which there were 34 athletes in Scotland 2013)

Female 800m: sub 2:12 runners only (of which there were 19 athletes in Scotland 2013)

Female 1500m: sub 4:30 runners only (of which there were 16 athletes in Scotland 2013)

Female 3000m: sub 10:00 runners only (of which there were 15 athletes in Scotland 2013)

Depending on uptake, coaches and athletes may need to prioritise the dates they would like to attend on to ensure as many athletes as possible are given the opportunity to participate.

Interested athletes (and coaches of these athletes) who have reached these standards should contact mark.pollard@scottishathletics.org.uk for more information.
